Abstract

It is generally agreed that Canadian national health insurance has done well over its first two decades of existence in achieving a viable mixture of patient satisfaction, expenditure control and producer acceptance. Patient consumers have remained satisfied that they are receiving optimal access to top quality care, health expenditures as a proportion of gross national product have been held almost constant, and medical and hospital associations have remained convinced that the budgets allotted for their groups are fair, if not optimal.
