Potential complications of cataract surgery

A literature survey of potential complications of cataract surgery shows that the frequency of complications depends on patient factors (e.g., myopia) and on the surgical techniques employed. For eyes that undergo extracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of an intraocular lens followed weeks or months later by a YAG laser capsulotomy, the reports indicate the following compliations: IOP transiently raised to over 30 mmHG (25%), cystoid macular edema (3%), iritis (1.5%), retinal detachment (1.0%) and retinal hemorrhage (0.3%). Another increase in the IOP occurs in 5% of these eyes after a few years. Optometrists need to be alert to these possibiliites. From 14% to 50% of patients with a retinal detachment present with no symptoms. When an optometrist is examining a patient following cataract surgery, the pupils should be dilated and the binocular indirect ophthalmoscope used.
