Potential complications of cataract surgery

Une étude documentaire sur les complications potentielles de l'ablation des cataractes démontre que la fréquence des complications varie selon les facteurs liés aux patients (p.ex., la myopie) et aux techniques chirurgicales employées. Lorsque les yeux subissent une extraction de cataracte extracapsulaire avec implantation d'une lentille intraoculaire suivie quelques semaines ou quelques mois plus tard d'une capsulotomie par laser YAG, les rapports indiquent les complications suivantes: augmentation transitoire de la PIO jusqu’à plus de 30 mmHg (25 %), œdème maculaire cystoïde (3 %), iritis (1.5 %), décollement rétinien (1,0 %) et hémorragie rétinienne (0,3 %). Une autre augmentation de la PTO survient dans 5 % de ces yeux après quelques années. Les optométristes doivent être à l’affût de ces possibilités. De 14 % à 50 % des patients atteints d'un décollement rétinien sont asymptomatiques. Lorsqu’un optométriste examine un patient après l’ablation des cataractes, les pupilles devraient être dilatées et on devrait utiliser un ophtalmoscope binoculaire indirect.
