The binocular accommodative response was measured for 21 minarc white, red, yellow, green and blue brightness matched letters presented on a black background monitor screen at a 40 cm viewing distance. The vergence of light from the targets was altered by convex and concave lenses placed before the subject's eyes. A laser optometer measured the accommodative response in 20 volunteers with normal vision. Results showed that a change in vergence is not an infallible stimulus for accommodation and identified 3 types of accommodative responses. The accommodative response pattern was similar for each colour but differed in amplitude because of the chromatic aberration inherent in the ocular optics.
