Abstract

The hazard to the retina of both near ultraviolet (UV-A) and short wavelength visible (blue) radiation, particularly in the very young and in aphakics is well recognized. Instruments with xenon flashtubes, halogen bulbs and other sources rich in these wavelengths increase this potential hazard during long or repeated diagnostic procedures and in teaching environments. The advantages and disadvantages of using short wavelength blocking filters during direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, threemirror funduscopy and fundus photography are described and evaluated. Filters which block all wavelengths below 450mm are recommended.
