Abstract

Keratoconus has become a common problem in everyday optometric practice. More keratoconic patients are seeking optometric care, mainly for contact lens therapy. Optometrists have found that contact lenses improve the visual acuity of most keratoconic patients. More and more, they are faced with questions concerning the genetics of the disease and the probability that it may be passed to future generations. The best counselling an optometrist can provide in this situation is to discuss some of the current theories on the inheritance of keratoconus.
