Numerous conditions result in cloudiness of one or more layers of the cornea. Many of these conditions are dystrophies but a few are degenerations. This literature survey summarizes the available information about them. They are conveniently divided into three groups based on the layer of the cornea primarily affected, namely anterior layers, stroma and posterior layers. Recurrent corneal erosion is a common complication and reduced vision is a more serious one. A table is provided to show the basic data in a form that simplifies comparisons among the various types of dystrophy. This first paper looks at the dystrophies of the anterior layers.
