Abstract

Viral infections of the eye encompass many diverse types of viruses and can result in extensive tissue destruction. The currently available ophthalmic antiviral drugs are nucleoside analogues. A detailed review of these antiviral agents is presented. The clinical indications for use, dosage regimen, side effects, and mechanism of action of the drugs are described.
